A growing number of organizations are seeing the value of building a coaching culture that empowers employees, at all levels, to develop their capabilities, enhance their value, and achieve their professional goals

Investing in coaching pays off. Through a partnership with the Human Capital Institute (HCI), ICF is exploring the components of strong coaching cultures and how organizations use coaching to achieve strategic goals.

Since 2014, criteria for strong coaching cultures have been benchmarked and researched with topics such as coaching and employee engagement, training and professional development for managers and leaders, coaching and leadership development for millennials and first-time managers, coaching and change management.

The importance

This year's research has a focus on the activities associated with building a strong coaching culture; namely, program design and implementation, professional development for internal coaches and managers/leaders using coaching skills, and evaluation of the impact of coaching.

This study found that a strong coaching culture is correlated with some of the indicators of a high-performing organization, including attraction to the employer brand, high-performance retention, and senior leadership strength.
32% of organizations use internal coach practitioners, external coach practitioners, and managers/leaders with coaching skills simultaneously.
More than four in five (83%) organizations plan to increase the skills of their managers/leaders with coaching skills over the next five years.
When asked how coaching activities are used to guide organizational goals and strategies, the three most frequently mentioned were leadership development (55%), talent development (51%), and performance management conversations (49%).
The organizations participating in this study allocated 21% of their total training budget to coaching initiatives.
Most respondents said their organization has no evaluation methods or tools for coaching. Evaluating the impact of coaching is an ongoing challenge for organizations.
